After visiting the ashram in Puducherry (Pondicherry) and Auroville, I still don't get it. They talk of human unity but we're not allowed to see any part of this "international community", pop. 2000. Seemed like a place for upper middle class Americans and Europeans looking for a cheap, crafty retreat in rural India. I guess there's nothing wrong with that! Am I missing something, is this some kind of crazy cult or am I just not open enough to accept the "divine consciousness"?

Complete with no religion but a lovely gold golf ball like center and green grass suitable for 18 holes. Not enough water for the residents but they have plans for a desalination plant. This is what tourists are allowed to see of Auroville. |
