Let's Get It On

Try this at home

When you think of sacred temples, the last thing on your mind is erotic sculptures. But not for the Chandela Rajputs. From 950 AD to 1150 AD, they carved out sandstone temples, 10% of which display humans in various positions of copulation, revealing clothing, and other enticing acts of arousal, which draw many tourists from around the world to gawk and admire. Why this form of expression on a temple? Some say that in order to see the deity inside, one must leave sexual desires outside. Others take the tantric philosophy that sexual experiences are a sacred act, and reaching orgasm takes you to a higher spiritual plane. No matter what explanation you believe, all who see these temples can agree that the statues feel life-like as seen in the folds in the back, the wet cloth clinging to a washerwoman's body, and Ganesha's adorable paunch. Yet another of India's not-to-be-missed sights.
