South Indian Breakfast. Or Lunch. Or Dinner.

Homemade breakfast of idli, sambar and chutney at  Daffodil Homestay in Fort Cochin

It's vegan (if you want), wheat-free, light, spicy and cool all at the same time. I have to say, despite it being a breakfast meal, I could eat this any time of the day.

Here's what's often on the menu:

Idli - fermented steamed rice cake, served with sambar and coconut chutney
Dosa - thin, crispy fermented rice and lentil crepe, cooked with an egg makes it just perfect or stuffed with masala potatoes
Appam - rice pancake, soft in the middle, crispy and lacy on the edges, great with egg curry or dipped in sweet coconut milk
Uppma - savory semolina with cashews and coconut
Uttappam - dosa batter but thick like a pancake, usually with a filling mixed right into the batter like carrots or onion

And instead of chai, breakfast is served with a milky, sweet coffee!

Street breakfast - egg dosa and idlis
Uppma with banana and papad
