Cochin Carnival

As soon as midnight of the new year strikes, a life-sized effigy of Santa is turned ablaze. But the New Year's celebration doesn't end there. After the town of Fort Cochin has recovered from the previous night's revelry, it picks up where it left off during the late afternoon hours of the first day of the year by filling the streets with its yearly carnival. Led by colorful, caparisoned elephants, cross-dressers, monsters, Hindu gods and goddesses, biblical re-enactments, percussion bands, and Malayali semi-superstars make up the majority of this festive procession. Pretty much anything goes, as long as it's loaded with gobs of make-up.
